The Communitech Hub is a 30,000 ft² facility dedicated to the growth and commercialization of Ontario’s digital media industry.
Located in Kitchener, Ontario, the Communitech Hub will house technology startups, splice innovation into enterprise, seed partnerships, fuse digital media with venture capital and bring entrepreneurs, multinational companies and academic institutions together.

Node on a National Network
The Communitech Hub is one of many facilities and organizations that comprise the Canadian Digital Media Network (CDMN).
CDMN works to establish Canada as a world leader in Digital Media by connecting these groups, helping their entrepreneurs, academic groups and governments collaborate, and speeding the commercialization of Canada’s digital talent, products, and companies.
Constituents
The Hub hosts a diverse group of companies, academic institutions, research bodies, and advisors from both the public and private sector.

Spatial organization
Broadly defined, the Hub has four functional areas:
- Space dedicated to small companies and their attendant resources
- Space for corporate, research and academic partners, services companies, and executives-in-residence working with Communitech’s Venture Services Program,
- Collaboration, development and meeting areas – including the executive briefing centre, the Hub Interactive Virtual Environment (HIVE), research and prototyping labs, and common work areas
- A common kitchen, private courtyard, mezzanine and meeting area
Facilities
The Hub combines state-of-the-art research and development facilities with traditional networking and event venues
Facilities include:
- Hub Interactive Virtual Environment (HIVE) – an immersive 2D and 3D environment
- Hardware and multimedia equipped prototyping and development workshop space
- A showcase space for demonstrations from tenant and visitor companies
- An Executive Briefing Centre with cutting-edge video conferencing and audio systems
- The Hub Theatre: 3500+ ft² of highly configurable space for conferences, dinners, concerts and digital community events
- In-house kitchen and catering

The Hub’s purpose is to help companies and stakeholders work, connect and play.
The Hub was made possible through the support of the Province of Ontario, which contributed $26 Million to the project, and through the support of leading technology companies in Waterloo Region, including Research in Motion, OpenText, Agfa, Christie Digital and many others.
