Communitech values community so much, we put it in our name

We’re a community of tech and whether our role is to connecting a founder to investors, or a startup to a charitable partner, we value building community building here, a lot.
Here’s a peek at a few of our recent community initiatives. We’re always trying to better connect the tech and non-tech communities in our great Region, so if you have any feedback on how we can do better, we’d love to hear from you!

  • Habitat for Humanity

Communitechers give back with Habitat for Humanity of Waterloo Region

In honour of our 20th anniversary, Communitech donated $70,000 to Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, committing to Habitat’s great work in making housing affordable and accessible in our Region. We also organized two weeks of Habitat build days to celebrate our partnership, with 26 tech companies participating alongside us.

  • Communitech Giving Challenge

Communitechers supporting families in Waterloo Region

In December 2018, we challenged Communitechers to give back to the community as a team– here’s what happened:

    • Logged over 250 hours of volunteer time for local charities including Habitat for Humanity, Saint John’s Kitchen, Epilepsy Canada and House of Friendship
    • Raised over $2,000 for charities including Reception House, Toy Mountain and House of Friendship
    • Collected over 200 items to donate locally, including donating dozens of starter kits for refugees supported through Reception, competing alongside other Waterloo-Toronto corridor innovation centres in Velocity’s Tech Giveback Classic
  • Oktoberfest Food Drive

SSimwave, Dozr and Skywatch particpate in the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Parade.

In Oktober (oops, we mean October) 2018, Communitech led our tech startups on a food drive where winners would walk in the Oktoberfest parade, representing their companies at the Waterloo Region’s best-attended parade.
After all was said and done, over 2,000 meals were donated to the Food Bank, and SSIMWave, Skywatch and DOZR won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Walking in the Oktoberfest Parade and seeing so many people out was a great experience for everyone!

  • Pitch In

Packed room for our Pitch In event.

Time is one of the most valuable resources you have to invest, and Pitch In saw leaders from the tech community pitching you on why a charitable agency is worth your volunteer hours. You can watch the videos from and Pitch In livestreams here. Those two events signed up almost 200 volunteers for 15 local charities.
Do you want to host a Pitch In night at your office or workplace? Communitech can help you with finding charitable partners and feeding your crowd! Just contact Beisan Zubi on the form below for more info.

  • Summer School

Our four free summer school classes in 2018 sold out within a few days of being posted and attendees were truly a cross-section of our community. We can’t wait to run the programming again in Summer 2019. Find out more about last year’s courses.

  • Tech for Good

A draft of the Tech For Good declaration from a True North workshopl

Communitech, among several community partners, used True North 2018 to craft the Tech-for-Good declaration. You can read the declaration here, but in brief, it calls for companies to build trust and respect data, be transparent, reskill for the future of work, leave no one behind, be inclusive at every stage and actively participate in collaborative governance.

Community Partnerships

Communitech is proud to partner with several community groups annually, from providing our space as an event resource, our channels and networks to spread awareness with our audiences, and even a small financial contribution to support community-building initiatives.
