Communitech is pleased to announce it has been chosen as one of six Regional Technology Development sites for AVIN. The Communitech site will be focused on high-definition 3D mapping data and localization, which is the virtual fuel that powers autonomous vehicles (AVs) on public roads. In collaboration with the University of Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR) and the Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation, Communitech will help create one of the first open 3D mapping communities directly supporting autonomous vehicle navigation as well as other smart city initiatives.
AVIN builds upon Ontario’s position as a globally-leading automotive manufacturing and supply jurisdiction and the large cluster of information and communication technology (ICT) companies operating in the province, allowing Ontario to reinforce its position as a North American leader in transformative automotive technologies, as well as transportation systems and supporting infrastructure.
This initiative capitalizes on the economic potential of connected and autonomous vehicle (C/AV) technologies by supporting the commercialization of best-in-class, made-in-Ontario solutions that create jobs and drive economic growth and global competitiveness. AVIN also helps Ontario’s transportation systems and infrastructure adapt to these emerging technologies.
AVIN is administered on behalf of the government of Ontario by Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE). Visit AVIN hub to learn how AVIN helps reinforce Ontario’s position as a North American leader in transformative automotive tech.
