Waterloo Region, June 10, 2016—Communitech announced today the Fierce Founders Accelerator for women-led startups. With $880,000 in funding from FedDev Ontario, the accelerator provides women entrepreneurs resources to grow their startups in Waterloo Region.

About 20 high-potential companies with at least one female co-founder or c-suite executive will take part in the accelerator. Participating startups must be in the late validation, early sales stage. They will receive up to $30,000 in funding, six-months residency at the Communitech Hub, and mentoring and business support from Communitech’s Executives in Residence team.

The first cohort of between 5-7 startups will begin September 2016, and will include the top company from the Fierce Founders Bootcamp being held this summer.

“Research shows, and we’ve seen first-hand, that companies with diverse teams perform better,” said Iain Klugman, president and CEO, Communitech. “However, we have not seen the number of female entrepreneurs coming through Communitech that we should. Research also shows that women-led businesses have a harder time accessing venture capital. We’re launching this program to address both those issues.”

“We offer programming for every step of a startup’s life, from idea and implementation, to scaling up and securing sales. Through Fierce Founders, women entrepreneurs have the opportunity to turn their business ideas into a reality with the bootcamp, and then accelerate it into a scalable business,” said Danielle Graham, Women in Tech program manager, Communitech.
