Fresh off a US$45-million Series C investment, cybersecurity company Arctic Wolf Networks has acquired RootSecure, a Waterloo Region startup that helps companies assess cyber risk.

The acqusition, announced Wednesday, means further growth for Arctic Wolf, which operates a development office in Waterloo and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif. The company provides “SOC as a service,” meaning it serves as a security operations centre for companies looking to avoid the high cost of building their own security capabilities in-house.

The addition of RootSecure means Arctic Wolf can broaden its offering beyond real-time security monitoring to include risk assessment.

As customers embrace SOC-as-a-service, they also want to understand their vulnerabilities,” said Brian NeSmith, CEO and co-founder of Arctic Wolf. “This acquisition augments our current offerings by adding comprehensive risk assessment to improve any customer’s overall cybersecurity posture.”

Earlier this year, RootSecure emerged from the $2-million sale of the assets of RootCellar Technologies to Uniserve, based in Vancouver. As of last summer, more than half of its 15 employees had worked with Sandvine, the Waterloo internet traffic management company that was acquired in July of 2017 by equity firm Francisco Partners.
