Maplesoft, one of the leading technology companies in Waterloo Region, is celebrating 25 years of incorporation this year, and the company celebrated the anniversary Tuesday with an event for its staff, local business leaders, academic and technology partners, and customers.
At the event held at the company’s headquarters in Waterloo, Maplesoft recognized the contributions of its founders and the team that invented the renowned Maple software – the world’s most advanced symbolic computation engine. Keith Geddes, and Gaston Gonnet, the creators of Maple and founders of Maplesoft, are known to be among the first of a breed of entrepreneurs that have catapulted Waterloo into a prominent knowledge-based economy.
In commemoration of the company’s roots in the University of Waterloo, Maplesoft’s CEO Jim Cooper presented the university with a unique serial numbered Gömböc 1988, marking the year of the company’s incorporation. A Gömböc is a mathematics-based shape discovered in 2007, with the use of Maple, and described as “one of the best ideas of the year” by the New York Times.
Speaking on the occasion, Brenda Halloran, Mayor of the City of Waterloo, said, “In Waterloo we truly value innovation and entrepreneurism and it is wonderful to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Maplesoft, a local company that began right here at the University of Waterloo.”
To mark this milestone year, Maplesoft is supporting numerous projects and competitions throughout the year, with the aim of promoting the study and use of mathematics. Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013, Who Wants to be a Mathematician, FIRST Robotics, SAE Collegiate Design Series, NASA Tech Design the Future Contest, and Sailbot 2013 are just a few of the Maplesoft sponsored competitions that encourage students to think creatively, and use mathematic and scientific tools.
