Open Data Exchange (ODX) gets front and centre with hackers, multi-nationals, and mid-size companies to demonstrate the open data value chain in a weekend.

At Waterloo Hacks, ODX will help enterprises and hackers more clearly see how open data can be leveraged for commercial purposes. Participating organizations include Canadian Tire, Canon, Kik, Manulife, OpenText, SAP, and Thomson Reuters who will provide their data, pain points and expertise. Contributing tech and API for students to use on the challenge are Miovision, Pebble, Thalmic Labs and University of Waterloo. As enterprises pitch their current challenges, students will hack to find solutions with the help of two ODX mentors and our open data API. The ODX API will provide hackers open data from across Canada along with data from the University of Waterloo. By using an enterprise’s own data sets along with existing open data, students will produce tech solutions to help enterprises predict, enhance and validate their offerings. By the end of the hackathon, both enterprises and hackers will have real-world examples demonstrating how open data can enhance the solutions they develop. Our goal is to show the value of data as a resource for economic growth.

Presented by Communitech and powered by Google for Developers, Waterloo Hacks is a 46-hour hackathon for University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University students of every skill set and every level. 175 top STEM students (selected from 570 applicants) gain access to world-class mentors, learn through technical workshops, check out the latest from Waterloo Region in a tech showcase and hear from Kik’s Ted Livingston and Perk’s Ted Hastings in an exclusive fireside chat.

Check out everything about the hackathon at waterloohacks.io.
