Standardized, Machine-Readable Format Opens Up a World of Possibilities

In recognition of International Open Data Day on March 5, 2016, Canada’s Open Data Exchange (ODX) and D2L Corporation, a global eLearning leader based in Kitchener, Ontario and a founding member of ODX, are pleased to announce that K-12 curriculum standards for Ontario and British Columbia are now available through the Achievement Standards NetworkTM (ASNTM).

The Ontario and B.C. standards, created with the assistance of ODX, is just a part of the massive repository of curriculum datasets managed by D2L and held within the ASN. The ASN contains the standards for every school district in the United States, overseas datasets, and now, Ontario and B.C. The curriculum standards for other provinces will be added to ASN over time.

“Although this K-12 provincial curriculum data was online, it was in a variety of formats and was difficult to use. Working with D2L to put this K-12 curriculum in a standardized, machine-readable format opens up a world of possibilities for use that will lead to innovation and economic development in the education space,” says ODX Managing Director Kevin Tuer.

D2L Chief Strategy Officer Jeremy Auger says, “As more technology gets integrated into the classroom and learning processes, open data repositories like ASN will make it easier for companies to develop applications, content, and learning activities that align with provincial standards, making them easier to adopt and use by educators.”

ODX and D2L plan to launch an ASN Coding Challenge in the near future to encourage developers to take advantage of this data to create new apps.
